Do Your Research
Look through magazines, browse the internet, and have some idea of what you are looking for when you go into a full service bridal salon. When in a full service bridal shop make sure to ask questions about alterations, payment schedules, ordering time frames, etc.
| Alterations-on a wedding gown are much different from ready-to-wear garments, because they are much more involved. in turn, they are much more time consuming. An experienced alterations department is not only a must, it is a treasure. Do not expect your alterations to be included in the cost of your gown. Be sure to ask about the charges, so you won't be surprised later. | |
| Payment Schedules-Make sure when your wedding gown, bridesmaid's gowns, tuxes, etc have to be paid for and the last date for measurements to be turned in to prevent delays in ordering. Wedding gowns can take up to 5 months to order in, bridesmaid's gowns up to 3 months, and tuxes nearly a month. Always make sure that you order soon enough to get the items in time. |
Tips to Find the Perfect Dress
Plus-Size-Don't hide yourself in a poufy wedding gown. They only make you look bigger. Go for flowing fabric with a bias cut or a side sweep style that accents a beautiful figure.
Petite-Small shapes need stature. Walk away from big shoulders, bows, or heavy embellishments.
Small Bust-To amplify your bust area try twisted fronts, draping, or elaborate lacework. Stay with a V-neck or sweetheart neck to give you the illusion of cleavage. Halter styles should be your friend. Some bust enhancers are great for lift and definition, but be sure not to overstuff. You don't want to look fake.
Full Hips-Structured A-line is a good cut, and caters to curves. Be sure it's fitted at the waist then flares slightly away from the body. This minimizes the hips.
Large Bust-While some brides envy a large-busted woman, they have their share of style difficulties. A straight, horizontal neckline is always the best. If you really want something a little revealing, make sure the cut of the gown is flattering and appropriate.
Thick Waist-Drop waist gowns are the best. They distract from the problem area, because you are drawing the eye elsewhere. Regardless of the skirt a lower waistline has a very slimming effect. This will draw your eye up to the neckline, or down to the skirt.
Skinny-Need more curves. Try a traditional ball gown that will create the illusion of full hips. Pleated skirts are also a great look, and will add a more unique feel to the gown.
Well-Defined Back-Show off with a sexy backless dress.
Shapely Shoulders-Spice things up with a strapless gown with a barely there bodice. |
